General
The AYY wireless network provides two different ways to use the network: via eduroam authentication (essid "eduroam") or via unauthenticated open access network (essid "tupsu"). Eduroam is an academic wireless federation which provides network roaming access to the users of its member organizations in Europe, Asia-Pacific, Canada and United States.
The AYY open access network ("tupsu") is an insecure network without encryption. Eduroam always uses WPA2/AES encrypted connections. Therefore eduroam is the recommended access method.
TKK eduroam instructions are available (in Finnish only). Users of other universities should refer to their own university's guidelines (a list of Finnish universities participating) for correct eduroam configuration.
The AYY wireless network supports IPv4 via DHCP and IPv6 via stateless address autoconfiguration regardless of access method (open access or eduroam). IPv6 DNS configurations are available via DHCPv6. The network also supports multicast, but there may be quality degrading issues due to bandwidth requirements and radio connectivity.
IPv6-only Wireless Network
The AYY IPv6-only open access network ("tupsuv6only") and the IPv6-only eduroam network ("eduroamv6only") are for test use only. These services do not support IPv4 and thus only native IPv6 is available. Network configurations are delivered by stateless address auto-configuration and DNS servers are available via DHCPv6. You may also define the DNS servers manually if your computer does not support DHCPv6.
As the current IPv6 services support is not very broad, we provide a temporary route to the legacy IPV4 world via the Funet NAT64 translation service. Similarly the DNS servers (ns5.ayy.fi and ns6.ayy.fi) offer DNS64 support. Previously used NAT64 and DNS64 services, which were kindly offered to us by TTY (Tampere University of Technology) and the TREX (Tampere Region Exchange) research project, are still available and can be used as well.
Network Technology
The wireless network supports IEEE 802.11b/g/n standards with 2.4 GHz and IEEE 802.11a/n standards with 5 GHz frequences. The wireless network offers up to 300 Mbps bandwidth (using 40 MHz channels with 5 GHz) for end-users.
